About the Kingdom of Calontir
The SCA divides its area into Kingdoms. This is
not unlike a corporation divding itself into separate divisions for easier
management. The particular Kingdom in which the Shire of Cúm an Iolair
participates is the Kingdom of Calontir. Calontir is Welsh for "Heartland".
The Kingdom of Calontir covers the states of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, most
of Iowa, and the Fayetteville area of Arkansas. For more information about the
Kingdom of Calontir, please visit the Kingdom's
web site.
About the Society of Creative Anachronism
The SCA was started in 1966 in Berkeley, California by a group of science
fiction and fantasy fans who wanted a theme party. Following the party, a group
got together to discuss the idea of a medieval re-creation and re-enactment group
(which has ended up being much like the Civil War, Revolutionary War or
Buck-skinning re-enactment groups that were beginning to form in the US). In
Britain, medieval and British Civil War recreation societies had existed for any
number of years. The Californians incorporated as a non-profit educational
society, started forming groups, and the rest is, as they say, history...
The SCA is an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating
the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. The "Known World" consists of 19
Kingdoms, with over 30,000 members residing in countries around the world.
Members, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events
which may feature tournaments, arts exhibits, classes, workshops, dancing, feasts,
and more. Each Kingdom's "royalty" hold courts at which they recognize and honor
members for their contributions to the group. For more information about the SCA,
please visit their web site.
